Expression of ATHB40, an Arabidopsis class I HD-Zip gene.

Members of the homeodomain leucine zipper (HD-Zip) superfamily act as transcription factor and are regulated by hormones during various developmental processes. Auxin and its polar movement play a crucial role in many aspects of plant development including root growth. ATHB40 belongs to the class I HD-Zip. ATHB40 was expressed in roots and flowers containing siliques, and was induced by auxin and ABA treatment. Examination of transgenic plants containing pATHB40::GUS fusion and whole-mount in situ hybridization showed that ATHB40 was expressed in primary and lateral roots, suggesting a possible role of ATHB40 in root development. Especially ATHB40 transcripts were detected mainly in root meristem. Taken together, ATHB40 may regulate root development under the control of a phytohormone auxin. Its role in root development will be further examined.
