Phylogenetic Nomenclature of Selected Vascular Plant Clades.

Phylogenetic definitions are presented for a selection of vascular plant clades, illustrating widely applicable strategies to choose names and structure definitions in accordance with the draft PhyloCode. We provide phylogenetically defined scientific names for clades that currently have only informal names (e.g., Cupressophyta ("conifer II"), Mesangiospermae ("core angiosperms"), and Gentianidae ("euasterids" or "core asterids")) or have no name at all (e.g., Acrogymnospermae; see below). Our definitions of Spermatophyta, Apo-Spermatophyta, and Pan-Spermatophyta to refer to a crown, an apomorphy-based, and a total clade, respectively, illustrate how phylogenetic nomenclature can promote precision in communication about phylogeny. Similarly, we define Eudicotyledoneae and Tricolpatae to refer to a crown and an apomorphy-based clade, respectively. Branch-modified node-based definitions are useful when defining the names of crown clades whose outgroup relationships are better known than the basal relationships within the clade (e.g., Mesangiospermae). Some names are best restricted to particular phylogenetic contexts. We define Monilophyta such that the name is applicable only in phylogenetic contexts in which horsetails and ferns form a clade that excludes seed plants. We define Acrogymnospermae such that the name is applicable only in phylogenetic contexts in which all extant gymnosperms form a clade that excludes angiosperms.
