Mining Genetic Diversity of Sweet Sorghum in the US Collection for Biofuel Production.

Sorghum cultivars with sweet, juicy stalks have been used for the production of syrup and molasses as a cottage industry for centuries in the US. This sweet sorghum germplasm would be highly beneficial for the emerging biofuel industry, since sorghum is a high energy capturing (C4) plant, well adaptive to many environmental extremes and highly productive under low input agricultural systems. The US National Plant Germplasm System maintains a sweet sorghum collection (1280 accessions), but little information is available on the collection to enhance utilization for ethanol production. Thus, 50 accessions with high sucrose production (>10 brix index) were selected for genetic diversity evaluation using 40 DNA markers and planted in the field for phenotypic characterization including such traits as sucrose content, brix index and total biomass production. We intend to (1) classify accessions into clusters to assess genetic diversity; (2) identify higher ethanol producing accessions; (3) select parents to develop genetic mapping population; and (4) optimize future experimental design of marker associations with traits contributing to biofuel production.
