Rose floral development : from phenology to genomics.

From an economic point of view the flower is important as an ornamental structure. Although flower development has been well characterized in model species (i.e. Arabidopsis) very little is known in ornamental plants. Petal traits heavily influence flower quality. Our group focuses on understanding the molecular events that influence petal morphogenesis and number in rose plants, using different approaches. We established a detailed description of the rose flower development from organs initiation until opening of the bud (using scanning electron microscopy, etc.). To identify genes that control petal number we are using two approaches: (i) A gene candidate approach permitted the identification of a set of genes as potentially associated with this phenomenon. Functional analysis of these genes is in progress (ii) A microarrays approach (using the available rose ESTs) is being used to compare transcriptome of rose plants presenting contrasted floral phenotypes. In parallel, we adapted a genetic transformation protocol for 2 rose species (modern and botanic) to validate the function of our candidate genes.
