Notes on the reproductive biology of Isomeris arborea (Capparaceae).

Isomeris arborea Nutt. (Capparaceae), also known as bladderpod, is an andromonoecious shrub native to California (USA) and Baja California (Mexico), frequently found on coastal bluffs, hills, and desert washes. Even though it is a common element throughout its range, little is known about its reproductive biology. We present some general information on the reproductive biology of this species based on observations of individuals growing at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. The hermaphrodite and staminate flowers are produced sequentially in the same terminal inflorescence (males generally in the upper half). In general the number of male flowers is greater than the hermaphrodites in an inflorescence, but hermaphrodites are larger in all floral structures as compared to males, probably appearing more attractive to pollinators and receiving visits. As well, the nectar content in hermaphrodite flowers was greater, potentially promoting more visits by nectar sucking visitors/pollinators. Although the effective pollinator is not known, bumblebees were thought to be the likely candidates by previous researchers, but we saw bumblebees only touching the stamens in their visits. In contrast, we propose that bees (both native and exotic) are probably the pollinators because we observed that on almost every visit they came in contact with the stamens and stigma.
