Identity genes for male and female organs in Cryptograms: preliminary investigations in MADS-box genes in the lycophyte Selaginella.

MADS-box genes encode transcription factors which play an import role in developmental control in plants. Some plant MADS-box gene groups such as B- and C-class genes function as male and female organ identity genes. Gymnosperms and angiosperms may have homologous organ identity genes. Extensive studies of MADS-box genes in angiosperms have undertaken and a few functional comparison between other land plants have been made. Whereas organ identity genes are poorly understand in cryptograms, preliminary investigations have shown that the lycophyte, Selaginella, has at least 18 MADS-box genes distributed in three clades – genes from the fern Ceratopteris and the moss Physomitrella are also found in these clades. If the male and female identity genes in Cryptograms are encoded by MADS-box genes, one of these clades may represent organ identity genes. Further investigation is needed to determine the connection between the organ identity genes of stamen/carpel in angiosperms and identity genes of the sporangia in ferns and lycophytes.
