The Planetary Biodiversity Inventory initiative aims to produce global monographic treatments of large taxa. PBI: Solanum is one such project that is monographing the estimated 1500 species of Solanum. The results of the taxonomic research are available on-line from the project's website, www.nhm.ac.uk/solanaceaesource. The project will provide basic taxonomic information, such as nomenclature and synonymy, together with species descriptions, identification keys, information on geographical distributions and phylogeny, and digitised herbarium specimens and literature for each species of Solanum. Data from PBI: Solanum has formed the basis of other biodiversity research projects. We highlight the results of some of these projects and provide an update on the progress of PBI: Solanum.
