Toward a model curriculum for plant biology doctoral candidates in research ethics. Current trends in graduate education in the sciences encourage both integrated and specific training in research ethics. There are few institutions that offer comprehensive training for their graduate students in these areas. This large collaborative effort consists of more than 130 faculty and graduate students in disciplines from all across engineering and the sciences. The project is an NSF sponsored collaboration of eight land grant and historically black universities, a private corporation, a national consortium for education in responsible conduct of research, and an open source software group. The plant biology group has developed an educational module to specifically address the ethical challenges facing doctoral students and all researchers in the plant sciences (ranging from biotech to field ecology). Our module works in conjunction with other modules on common issues in responsible conduct of research (e.g., authorship and intellectual property) and is designed to work both as a traditionally taught course as well as a distance learning course. We can teach in both formats because all of the modules have been designed using a unique educational software platform called OpenSeminar. The OpenSeminar in Research Ethics, of which our plant biology module is included, is also in the process of being translated into Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian, so this work can be utilized by students around the globe. Our project goal is to develop a model curriculum for doctoral candidates in research ethics. Log in to add this item to your schedule
