Control of spikelet meristem determinancy and transition to floral meristem by two INDETERMINATED SPIKELETS1 (IDS1)-like genes in rice.

Inflorescences in angiosperms are complex structures that have many different types of meristems. Grass plants have evolved one of the most complex and characteristic inflorescences. Most grass inflorescences are arranged in little spikes, or spiklets; each consists of one or more flowers plus associated bracts. We have recently reported that IDS1-like gene SUPERNUMERARY BRACT (SNB) plays exclusive roles in rice spikelet development by regulating the transition from spikelet meristems to floral meristems, proper number of bracts, and floral organ identities. There is another IDS1-like gene in rice, which is most identical to the maize IDS1. The maize IDS1 regulates inflorescence architecture by controlling spikelet meristem determinancy. The osids1 mutants in rice showed almost normal spikelet development, whereas snb/osids1 double mutants exhibited the phenotypes in their spikelets. The phenotypes are similar to those of the snb single mutant. However, the double mutants showed more severe phenotype than the snb single mutants; the number of bracts was increased and progression of meristem identities was retarded. In addition, some snb/osids1 spikelet meristems failed to determine and resulted in extra branching in axile of spikelet meristems. These results suggest that two IDS1-like genes redundantly function in progression of spikelet meristem identity and spikelet meristem determinancy in rice. Our results provide the understanding of the inflorescence diversity in grass family.
