Biodiversity of the Hengduan Mountains region and adjacent areas of south-central China.

The Sino-Himalayan region, at the core of which lie the Hengduan Mountains, is a north temperate "hotspot" of biodiversity, exceptionally rich in plants and fungi, comparable in size (ca. 500,000 sq km) and vascular plant diversity (ca. 11,000 species) to Kalimantan, Indonesia. International collaborative efforts to inventory the region are ongoing and to date have yielded over 40,000 GPS-georeferenced specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, and fungi. These specimens complement the more than 180,000 historic specimens in the Harvard Herbaria made by early collectors such as Joseph Rock, and which are the focus of databasing and georeferencing efforts. To this we have developed a gazetteer of place names and their variants as they appear on herbarium labels, an invaluable resource for adding legacy geographic information to modern distribution maps. All data and results from the project are available online at http://hengduan.huh.harvard.edu/fieldnotes.
