As a part of our studies on Nigerian folkloric medicinal plants, we have investigated the chemical constituents of Caralluma dalzielii and Ceropegia deightonii (fam. Apocynaceae, subfam. Asclepiadoideae). Five new steroidal glycosides, consisted of 5,6-dihydrosarcostins with various ester groups, were isolated from C. dalzielii , although tomentogenin-oriented steroids were common in the Malian species. This finding indicated the presence of chemical races between the two domestics. Also, a novel steroid, 2,21-dihydroxy-4,6-pregnadiene-3,20-dione, was isolated from C. deightonii . The related pregnanes were identified in some Apocynaceous plants such as Apocynum sp. and Nerium sp. . We will present other chemical constituents from Raphionacme burkei as well.
