Extracts Purified from Chinese Puer Tea Induce Cell Death of Human Breast Cancer Cell Line MCF-7.

To test the capacity of Chinese Puer tea on human cancer cell growth, I have used water or chloroform to purify water-soluble or lipid-soluble extract from dried Puer tea to determine the effect of water-soluble or lipid-soluble extract on the growth of breast cancer cell line MCF-7. MTT assay (3,[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and fluorescent staining method were used for observing changes in cell morphology and cell proliferative activity after the cells were treated with different concentrations (0-1000 μg) and different incubation times (0-96 hours) of water-soluble or lipid-soluble extract. My results demonstrated the followings: 1) Cell viability was significantly decreased by water-soluble or lipid-soluble extract after 100 μg or 1000 μg treatment for 24 hours; 2) The potency of 100 μg lipid-soluble extract is higher than that of 100 μg water-soluble extract although the potency of both 1000 μg water-soluble and lipid-soluble extract were the same; 3) MCF-7 cells become circular and shrunk, and their nuclei are condensed and fragmented after both water-soluble and lipid-soluble extracts for 48 hours, which are typical features of apoptosis. My present results indicated that Puer tea was a novel source for anti-tumor component purification and invention.
