Phylogeny and classification of the Macaronesian clade of Crassulaceae.

Previous broad phylogenetic analyses of Crassulaceae have recovered seven major lineages within the family. One clade that has been strongly supported by multiple data sources (e.g., cpDNA RFLP and nrDNA ITS, matK, and combined matK /ITS sequences) comprises three genera that are largely endemic to the islands of Macaronesia. These genera, Aeonium, Aichryson and Monanthes, collectively display a high level of morphological, growth form, and physiological diversity. Specifically, the group includes both annuals and perennials, small herbs to large shrubs, and obligate CAM, obligate C3 , as well as physiologically variable species. Previous analyses have recovered a well supported Aichryson clade and Aeonium clade (including the previously recognized genus Greenovia), but the monophyly of Monanthes has been questioned. Specifically, the phylogenetic position of the sole annual member of this genus (M. icterica) has been difficult to ascertain. This could be due to limited taxonomic sampling of this genus in previous studies and/or the methods of analyses previously employed (i.e., maximum parsimony), produced a very long branch leading to this taxon. We present the results of analyses of DNA sequencing data from a broad sampling of the Macronesian clade, including all recognized species of Monanthes and Aichryson. The classification and patterns of evolution across the Macaronesian clade are investigated in light of MP and ML estimates of phylogeny.
