History, Genomes and Importance of Saffron in The World and Iran.

Saffron is known and appreciated all over the world as exceptional natural food additive and use for many medicinal properties. Crocus genus is a member of Iridaceae include of 85 species. Origin of the plant is Greece, Turkey, Middle east and Iran. Before Islam is cultivated in Iran. Cultivated Saffron (Crocus sativus) is triploid (3n=24) but there is diploid species with 2n=12, 2n=16, 2n=20 and 2n=24 chromosomes. At present the biggest Saffron cultivation is in Iran. The cultivation area in Iran is about 57000 hectares and production is about 230 ton. Iranian share of saffron from the world production and export is about 90 percent. In this paper will be explain about saffron history, species, genomes and economical in Iran and the world.
