Abstract Detail

Reproductive Development

Ballantyne, David J. [1].

Earlier greenhouse flowering of dormant rhododendron and azalea cultivars indicated by a decreased chlorophyll a fluorescence.

Several azalea cvs and a rhododendron cv were brought from the field into a 5C min. greenhouse in 2004-05 , and into a 10C min. greenhouse in 2005-06. Plants were dug in the field from October to March in each year. After plants were brought into the greenhouse , chlorophyll a fluorescence (Fv/Fm)and chlorophyll levels were determined.Later, times of anthesis were recorded. Flowering time was considerably less for plants in the greenhouse, and especially with plants in the 10C min.greenhouse, compared with plants in the field. A decrease in Fv/Fm could be detected in most cvs brought into the greenhouse after October, and indicated both a decreased flowering time and a possible breaking of bud dormancy. This decrease in azalea and rhododendron Fv/Fm was not accompanied by a decrease in chlorophyll levels, unlike the decrease in Fv/Fm in senescing hydrangea leaves , which was preceded by a considerable loss of chlorophyll.
