Biogeography

Mione, Thomas [1], Leiva González, Segundo [2].

Endemism in the genus Jaltomata (Solanaceae) in Cajamarca, Peru.

Cajamarca covers 35,000 square km of mountainous terrain, shares a border with Ecuador to the north, and is bounded by Rio Marañon along the east. Only two decades ago there were no documented Jaltomata species in the department of Cajamarca, but fieldwork by S. L. G. and by both authors in 2007, 2005 and 1999 has led to documentation of 21 distinct and diverse Jaltomata species in the department.  Sixteen of the 21 species are endemic to Cajamarca. Field observations suggest that nearly all species are protogynous, because anthers remain undehisced after the flowers open, and then filaments elongate and anthers dehisce. Almost all of the Jaltomata of Cajamarca are shrubs with orange berries, but red and purple-black berries have also been documented in the department. At least three species produce red-orange floral nectar. Corolla colors include blue, purple, green and white, and corolla forms vary from rotate to tubular. All but two of the species grow above 2000 m of elevation. This year we learned that in the neighboring department La Libertad, hummingbirds repeatedly visit for floral orange nectar produced by a Jaltomata species that grows only in the protection of the spiny leaves of a Puya species.  In Peru, ripe berries of nearly all Jaltomata species are eaten raw by local people.
