Plantibodies(The Antibody Genes In Plants): Their Applications And Advantages.

Plantibody- the emerging concept in the field of controlling diseases comprises of two parts – Plants + Antibody. The high level histological organization of animals limits the expression of antibody producing genes. Thereby plants having lower tissue differentiation are gaining importance as “biopharming factories” where these genes can act. Basically, plantibody production banks on the principle of immunomodulation – interfering with cellular metabolism (also phytohormone action) or pathogen infectivity by ectopic expression of genes encoding antibodies / antibody fragments. An effective plantibody production system is required to achieve the goal and to produce therapeutic recombinant proteins the “biopharming factories” need – (a). Appropriate heterologous plant expression system. (b) Optimal combination of gene expression regulators. (c) Control of post–translational processing of recombinant products. (d) Efficient purification method of products recovered. Thereby recent research focuses on the fine – tuning of expression systems and the detailed characterizations of recombinant products, including the implication of plant specific glycosylation. The methods require following steps:(i) Cloning of antibody / antibody fragments coding genes that bind target antigens. (ii) To find the condition for high accumulation of coded proteins in plant body. (iii) Immunomodulation of metabolism / pathogen activity by interfering the target molecule. Recently, a recombinant monoclonal antibody for Rabies prophylaxis was produced in transgenic plants. In near future, plantibodies have major thrust to control diseases through optimized gene isolation and expression specially in reducing subcellular environment and would turn immunomodulation as a powerful tool for gene inactivation, complementary-classical antisence and co-suppression approaches.
