Use of Microsoft ® Photo Story 3 multimedia presentation software as an alternative to Microsoft Office ® PowerPoint.

Providing an alternative to Microsoft Office ® PowerPoint presentation software was greeted with interest and enthusiasm. Students were introduced to Microsoft ® Photo Story 3 multimedia presentation software and it received a unanimous approval rating. Students examined similarities and differences among selected structure-function relationships from prepared slides of plant- and animal-tissue. Each team of students generated digital photomicrographs and then formulated inferences and conclusions on structural and functional similarities and differences. Teams generated multimedia presentations whereby they down loaded and edited images, added explanatory text, generated transitions, added open source music and provided voice narration. To give a presentation, the team was able to remain seated and simply clicked start. This multimedia presentation software was available as a free download, was rated as easy and fun to use, yet provided students with flexibility to be creative and to ensure participation from all team members. Students requested to use this software for a subsequent exercise in the same class and for a different assignment in another class. Grades on quizzes and exams reflected a high level of student engagement. Assessment of this exercise informed teaching leading to modifications of the exercise, led to incorporation of Photo Story 3 software for subsequent assignments, and reflected a positive outcome for student learning.
