Systematics Section / ASPT Roalson, Eric [1], Hipp, Andrew L. [2]. Reconstructing patterns of diversification in Carex subgenus Vignea (Cyperaceae): an nDNA/cpDNA multigenic approach. Carex (Cyperaceae) is one of the most diverse and most taxonomically difficult groups of angiosperms, with more than 2000 recognized species and 70+ sections. Taxonomy of the genus is further complicated by the fact that Carex is paraphyletic relative to the other four genera of Cariceae. One of the few Carex lineages consistently supported as monophyletic is Carex subgenus Vignea. Relationships within Vignea, however, are poorly understood, and molecular phylogenetic analyses to date have suggested that most sections are polyphyletic. Complicating our understanding of this lineage is the fact that all current phylogenetic hypotheses in the subgenus have used nrDNA spacers as their data source, and these have been recently shown to be affected in Vignea by shallow and deep lineage sorting, persistence of non-recombining paralogs within species, and possibly hybridization. In an attempt to clarify relationships in this clade and provide a framework for studies of character evolution, biogeography, and classification, we will present preliminary data from nine low copy number nuclear gene families and three cpDNA spacer regions and assess their abilities to accurately reconstruct lineage diversification in Vignea.
