Classification and character evolution of the mulberry family (Moraceae) based on morphology and molecules.

The Moraceae, or mulberry family, comprise 37 genera and approximately 1100 species distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions worldwide. Moraceae exhibit a great diversity of inflorescence architectures, life history traits, breeding systems, and pollination syndromes. Historically, the family has been divided into five tribes including the Ficeae (figs), Artocarpeae, Moreae, Dorstenieae, and Castilleae, although a recent revision has introduced two new tribes, Antiaropsideae and Soroceae. Molecular phylogenetic studies of Moraceae instead support the monophyly of four tribes and the paraphyly of Moreae which is defined by plesiomorphic characters. Morphological characters that underpin the taxonomy of Moraceae have never been subject to phylogenetic analysis. The goal of our study is to assemble a morphological data matrix that can be analyzed separately and in combination with molecular data to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships among genera of Moraceae. Also, the results provide a basis for reconstructing ancestral character states and exploring character evolution throughout the family. We scored 70 morphological features including vegetative, reproductive, and wood anatomical characters for 94 species representing almost all genera of Moraceae. Using parsimony and Bayesian methods, these data were analyzed separately and in combination with ndhF and 26S datasets from previous molecular analyses. Our results do not support the most recent tribal classification of Moraceae based on taxonomy. We present a classification scheme for the genera of Moraceae based on all currently available information using phylogenetic methods, identify convergent characters, and reconstruct the evolution of inflorescence architecture in the family.
