Generic delimitation in South American Stipeae.

In 2006, Arriaga and Barkworth recognized a new stipoid genus, Amelichloa, with four South American and one Mexican species. In a recent synopsis, the South American species of Amelichloa were placed in Jarava and the Mexican species in Achnatherum. To help clarify the status of Amelichloa and the relationships of its species to those of Jarava, and Achnatherum, we examined the ITS region and three cpDNA regions in 92 stipoid samples representing 18 supraspecific groups. Among these groups 15 species of Achnatherum, 5 of Amelichloa, 13 of Jarava, and 6 of Stipa subg. Pappostipa. Few of the supraspecific groups were monophyletic on both the ITS and cpDNA trees. Nevertheless, the results tend to support recognition of Amelichloa, adoption of a narrow interpretation of Jarava, recognition of Stipa subg. Pappostipa as a genus, and the combination of Aciachne and Ortachne in a single genus. Nassella and Achnatherum were both polyphyletic, particularly in the cpDNA tree. Unfortunately, samples of Stipa subg. Ptilostipa, which is morphologically similar to subg. Pappostipa, were too degraded for use.
