Reproductive Development Ryu, Choong-Hwan [1], Lee, Shinyoung [2], Jang, Sung-Hoon [3], An, Gynheung [3]. Functional analyses of the putative flowering time gene OsMADS56. Both Arabidopsis and rice contain a large number of MADS box genes that play diverse roles in controlling plant development and organ identity. Among these, Arabidopsis MADS-box gene SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CO 1/AGAMOUS-LIKE 20 (SOC1/AGL20) acts as a major flowering activator. In rice, there are two genes, OsMADS50 and OsMADS56 that are highly homologous to SOC1/AGL20. We previously reported that OsMADS50 functions as a positive factor for flowering under the long-day conditions. In this study we report functional analysis of OsMADS56. Knockout mutations of the gene did not resulted in alteration of flowering time nor floral organ morphology. However, overexpression of OsMADS56 caused late flowering phenotype. This delayed flowering phenotype was observed only under the long-day conditions. We also observed that the transcript levels of the flowering activators, Ehd1, OsMADS14, and Hd3a were decreased in the overexpressed transgenic plants under long-day conditions. These observations suggest that OsMADS56 functions antagonistically to OsMADS50. Log in to add this item to your schedule
