Notes on some Cortinarius species (section Calochroi) collected in Mediterranean holm-oak woodlands: ITS sequences as bardcodes for classification of the high morphological diversity in the Mediterranean regi. The species of Cortinarius sect. Calochroi show a high grade of morphological variability in Mediterranean region with regard to their vicariant populations in the Eurosiberian region. This fact has originated a big taxonomical and nomenclatural confusion, especially when the variability affects the characters traditionally used for taxonomical delimitation. Here we have attempted to clarify the taxonomical and nomenclatural situation of several Calochroi taxa in the Mediterranean area by using macromorphological and spore analyses, and phylogenetic analysis of the ITS sequences. We demonstrate the usefulness of the ITS sequences for specific identification in Cortinarius (bardcoding). We have been able to assign the studied material to eight species using ITS sequences, and detect misidentified collections which were used by their authors to describe new species. Moreover, molecular data has been useful to test the taxonomical value of morphological and spore characters. The morphological analysis has enabled to detect morphological variability previously unreported in several taxa. A new subspecies, C. haasii subsp. quercus-ilicicola, is proposed on the base of morphological and molecular data. Finally, our results increase both the distribution area as well as the ecological preferences of most of studied species, and several important biogeographical disjunctions are reported.
