Inference of basal monocot relationships from plastid data.

Relationships among the major lineages of monocots have come into sharp focus in the past few years, with most analyses depicting a well supported and deep split between Acorus and all other monocots (‘Nartheciidae’), and another between Alismatales and the remaining taxa (‘Petrosaviidae’). Dioscoreales and Pandanales are moderately well supported as sister taxa in large multigene analyses, and Liliales are moderately well supported as the sister group of Asparagales-Commelinidae. However, deep relationships within the major clades are not necessarily well supported or congruent among analyses. We address some of these problematic cases by improving taxon sampling for a large multigene plastid data set that consists of numerous plastid genes and associated noncoding regions from multiple exemplar taxa (~15 kb per taxon). Our improved sampling is aimed at clarifying relationships among the genera of Melanthiaceae, Nartheciaceae, and Tofieldiaceae, three families that define basal splits in Liliales, Dioscoreales and Alismatales, respectively. We examine a recent finding that Isidrogalvia belongs in Nartheciaceae, not Tofieldiaceae, and address the relationships among the three major branches of Alismatales (Araceae, Tofieldiaceae and a core clade of alismatid families).
