Livistoneae (18 genera, c. 270 spp.) are a well-supported, monophyletic tribe of fan palms. Although recent molecular phylogenetic data has clarified the circumscription of the tribe and partly resolved infratribal relationships, the relationships of seven, presumably early-branching genera are ambiguous. Livistoneae are outstanding within Arecaceae in their rich and extensive leaf structural and anatomical variability. Accordingly, among sources of structural evidence with potential to clarify the systematics of the tribe, leaf lamina anatomy appears particularly promising. Preliminary results of this study support the clade of subtribe Livistoninae, that share an adaxial epidermis composed of shallow, proximodistally-elongate cells and short cells that anticlinally protrude between adjacent hypodermal cells. Two of the seven unplaced genera, Colpothrinax and Pritchardia, uniquely share a substomatal chamber formed by two C-shaped, proximodistally-oriented hypodermal cells. Structural features will be discussed that relate Livistoneae to the larger context of coryphoid palms, particularly the pinnately-compound date palms, which are sister to this tribe.
