Abstract Detail
Systematics Section / ASPT Still, Shannon [1]. Phylogeny and evolution of the poppies in the Eschscholzioideae (Papaveraceae). The poppy subfamily Eschscholzioideae consists of three genera and 16 species that are native to southwestern North America and islands of the Pacific coast. Past morphological and molecular research has identified Dendromecon, Hunnemannia and Eschscholzia as a monophyletic group but no work has been published detailing the relationships of the species of Eschscholzia, the largest of the three genera with 12 species. Phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences from the nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (trnL-F) genomes support the monophyly of the Eschscholzioideae while providing a molecular phylogeny for the study of character evolution within the genus Eschscholzia. The molecular phylogeny of the subfamily indicates a reduction in base ploidy within the genus Eschscholzia as well as subsequent increases of ploidy. Log in to add this item to your schedule
