rDNA and plastid sequence data suggest that the genus Rohrbachia is sister to Typha s. str.

The genus Rohrbachia (Kronf. ex Riedl.) Mavrodiev (3 species) was described based on Typha subsect. Rohrbachia. To determine if Rohrbachia is separate from the rest of Typha, we investigated rDNA (ITS) and plastid (atpB-rbcL spacer) sequence data from R. minima and R. alekseevii, as well as sequences representing 13 species and hybrids of Typha; we used species of Sparganium (Sparganiaceae), Guzmania (Bromelliaceae), and Tillandsia (Bromelliaceae) as outgroups. Representatives of all four treated sections of Typha s. l. were included in the analysis. Our atpB-rbcL spacer and ITS sequence data suggest that the genus Rohrbachia is sister to Typha s. str. and may be therefore accepted as an independent taxon. Current molecular data, combined with morphological evidence, argue against the treatment of Rohrbachia at the rank of section and suggest, instead, generic status.
