Resolving relationships in Grevillea (Proteaceae), the third largest Australian plant genus, with four chloroplast and three nuclear DNA regions. Grevillea (363 spp.) is the third largest plant genus in Australia, behind Acacia and Eucalyptus. This ecologically diverse genus encompasses both 40 m tall rainforest trees and erect and prostrate shrubs of the central deserts. The closely related genera Hakea (149 spp. restricted to Australia) and Finschia (4 spp. from western Pacific Islands) differ from Grevillea in fruit characteristics. We infer a phylogeny for the group with DNA sequence data from four chloroplast (rpl16 intron and the matK, atpB, and ndhF genes) and three nuclear (two loci of waxy and the PHYA gene) from a sixth of the species in Grevillea and representatives of Hakea and Finschia. This sampling represents 33 of 36 informal groups currently recognized in Grevillea, and it represents the most complete taxonomic sampling for phylogenetic inference in Grevillea to date. We will address the evidence for the monophyly of Grevillea, as well as patterns in the diversification of ecologically significant traits (e.g., fruit characters).
