Phenotypic Comparison of Four cesa3 Alleles in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The synthesis of cellulose in the primary cell wall of Arabidopsis thaliana requires the functions of at least three different isoforms of cellulose synthase, namely the products of the CesA1, CesA3, and CesA6 genes. Mutations in all of three of these genes can result in a significant shortening and thickening of both the shoot and root systems. We have characterized the phenotypes and genetic interactions of four different alleles of CesA3 (cev1, eli1-1, eli1-2, and an allele isolated in our lab which we have designated mre1). We have found that the two eli1 alleles are dominant to mre1, but that mre1 and cev1 demonstrate intragenic complementation. Roots of the four alleles display different growth dynamics, different cellular phenotypes, and different responses to environmental conditions.
