New Species of Eugenia sect. Racemosae (Myrtaceae) from Brazilian Amazon Rainforest.

The largest of the New World Myrtaceae genera, Eugenia L. is currently stimated to contain 500 to 2,000 species, distributed from South of Mexico, Cuba, the Antilles to Uruguay and Argentina, with a small number of species (ca. 60) in Africa. The traditional characters of Eugenia are the 4-merous flowers, with free calyx lobes, hypanthium not prolonged beyond ovary and embryo with fused cotyledons. The species of Eugenia have been classified into sections based on inflorescence morphology. Eugenia sect. Racemosae O. Berg, with 38 species in Brazil, can be diagnosed by its flowers exclusively in racemes and/or panicles, with a distinctive axis bearing the flowers along with a proportion pedicel x internode of 2x1 or less. Descriptions of four new species of Eugenia sect. Racemosae from Brazilian Amazon are presented. Distribution data, illustrations as well as coments of all of the species are also presented. Eugenia pallidopunctata is known only from the type collection and is characterized by the indistinct glandular dots on the upper surface of the leaves, inflorescences with filiform and delicate axis and very densely pubescent hypanthium. The indumentum of the inflorescence of Eugenia caducibracteata is similar to a velvet, with very short hairs, densely distributed; it has early deciduous flower bracts and is known from the Central and Eastern Amazon. Eugenia tenuiflora is a member of the group of species characterized by the racemes with rachis covered with rusty hairs; it has also densely pubescent hypanthium, as well as small and delicate flower buds, with very short pedicel. The short peduncle of the inflorescences is the main feature of Eugenia breviracemosa; it is known from the Basin of Rio Negro. (FAPESP, KLARF)
