Molecular phylogeny of Apocynaceae s. l. based on rbcL sequences.

The large family Apocynaceae is mostly distributed in the pantropics. The family Asclepiadaceae was segregated from Apocynaceae in 1910 by Brown based on palynological characters. Recent molecular as well as morphological data have shown that Apocynaceae forms a monophyletic group with Asclepiadaceae. Endress and Bruyns (2000) have treated Asclepiadaceae as one of the five subfamilies of Apocynaceae, including Rauvolfioideae, Apocynoideae, Asclepiadoideae, Periplocoideae and Secamonoideae in their revision of the family Apocynaceae. The subfamily Asclepiadoideae is further divided into three tribes, Ceropegieae, Marsdenieae and Asclepiadeae. Earlier molecular works based on rbcL, trnL-trnLF and matK regions sampled only a few genera from Apocynaceae, and the studies were far from conclusive. Moreover problems exist over the position of some tribes based on the trnL-trnLF region. In the present study we present molecular phylogeny of Asclepiadoideae to include several new genera sampled from India and analyzed together with the existing data. The well resolved clades in our study correspond well to morphologically based subfamilies and tribes of Apocynaceae. The previous uncertainty in the placement of Tylophora is resolved, which is nested within the tribe Asclepiadeae rather than Marsdenieae. The positions of other genera are discussed in relation to their morphological characteristics.
