Systematics Section / ASPT Angiosperm Tree of Life Research Group, AToL [1], Soltis, Douglas E. [1]. Progress in Assembling the Angiosperm Tree of Life. The Assembling the Tree of Life (AToL) project on angiosperms has made considerable progress in developing tools for all systematists as well as in clarifying 12 of the most problematic deep nodes in flowering plants. Our informatics group has developed TOLKIN, an information management and analytical web application that provides informatics support for phylodiversity and biodiversity research projects. Links to external resources are being established to automate data submission from TOLKIN to more permanent repositories, such as MorphBank and GenBank. We have shown that pyrosequencing via the 454 Life Sciences Corporation’s Genome Sequencer 20 permits rapid sequencing of entire plastid genomes – we have completed 30 plastid genomes at half the budgeted price. Amplification and sequencing of the entire plastid IR region has been employed in several clades (Saxifragales, rosids, caryophyllids) and may be an ideal source of data for resolving deep level relationships. Large data sets (25,000-50,000 bp) have now been assembled for problematic clades with relationships clarified within: eudicots, Saxifragales, Ericales, campanulids, and rosids. Some deep level relationships (e.g., Chloranthaceae, manoliids) remain problematic even with nearly complete plastid genome sequences. Log in to add this item to your schedule
